On the road again.
The top high school baseball academy teams in Canada just can’t wait to get on The Road to Okotoks again.
Following the highly successful debut of the national event – which pits the top U19 programs from coast to coast against each other in pursuit of the Morneau Cup – at the Seaman Stadium Complex in Okotoks in July, the tournament is making a return in 2027.
Baseball Canada and Dawgs Academy announced the dates for the second annual Canadian championship as registration was opened up to teams on Sept. 1st.
Regional qualifiers at yet to be determined locations in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario will take place from May 27-30, 2027.
The first 40 teams to register for The Road to Okotoks will duke it out at the qualifying tournaments. From there, the field will be cut down to 16 squads and those clubs will compete for championship bragging rights in southern Alberta between July 27th and Aug. 1st. If necessary, Aug. 2nd has been set aside should the weather fail to cooperate during the final weekend of action.
“The first Road to Okotoks showed exactly what this event can be,” said Baseball Canada CEO Jason Dickson in a website announcement.
“The level of play was outstanding, but what really separated the event was the environment in Okotoks. Seeing these young players compete in front of large, passionate crowds at Seaman Stadium created something incredibly special. It’s an experience that is difficult to replicate anywhere else in Canadian baseball, and we want even more programs to have the opportunity to be part of it in 2027.”
The 2026 event saw 29 teams register for the regional qualifiers before the host Okotoks Dawgs Black defeated Sylvan Lake Gulls Prep by an 11-5 score at Seaman Stadium in the championship final. Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer Justin Morneau attended the game and presented the Morneau Cup to the Dawgs following the win.
“As hosts, the Dawgs goal with the inaugural Road to Okotoks was to provide participating teams a quality of championship that they had never before experienced,” said John Ircandia, the Founding & Managing Director of the Okotoks Dawgs.
“We knew with Seaman Stadium and Tourmaline Field there were no better facilities. We knew that the passion of fans in our community was unmatched. We knew this was the place current MLB standouts Tristan Peters and Matt ‘Tugboat’ Wilkinson honed their skills. And we were thrilled that the thousands of fans that attended the Road saw Canada’s future big leaguers and were able to appreciate the extraordinary level of baseball being played from coast to coast in our country. Road to Okotoks, year two, will be bigger and better!”
Games will be played at Seaman Stadium – home of the Okotoks Dawgs of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), a wood-bat summer collegiate circuit in Alberta and Saskatchewan – and the adjacent Tourmaline Field in Okotoks.
Prep Baseball will also host a two-round Morneau Cup Draft Show before the championship tournament. The coaching staffs of the 16 teams that qualify for play in Okotoks will have the opportunity to select additional players from other programs to add to their rosters if they wish.
In addition to the pursuit of the Morneau Cup, The Road to Okotoks also features a Home Run Derby, which was won by Louis-Charles Larouche of the Dawgs this year, as well as the selection of tournament all-stars.
