State of Alberta’s Game 2019

There is no shortage of topics of discussion for baseball officials heading into 2020.

The game’s growth has been front and centre as we see more talent make their way to higher levels, but enrollment, training and coaching will also be on their radar.

We chatted with Baseball Alberta’s Darren Dekinder recently for his analysis of 2019 and what’s to come in the new year.

Matt Lloyd admits he waited a lot longer to get into professional baseball than he had hoped.

After finally getting drafted by the Cincinnati Reds this summer and spending time in Billings and Dayton, his eyes are now set on making up for lost time.

Now into his first offseason as a pro, we caught up with Lloyd to talk about the highs and lows of the last few months.

Road To Recovery

Edmonton’s Erik Sabrowski was on the right path to professional baseball.

After lighting it up with the Edmonton Prospects and Cloud County Community College, he was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2018.

But shortly after reporting to the Padres in Arizona, the left-hander learned he would need Tommy John surgery.

We caught up with Sabrowski to walk through the recovery and what’s next on his journey back to baseball.

2019 MLB Draft Review

The 2019 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft took place from June 3-5 and we have a summary of players with Alberta ties who were selected over the three-day event.

Some of the players chosen in the draft moved here to attend one of the province’s baseball academies, others were born and raised here, while others became familiar faces through the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL).

We also took note of players who are related to some well-known players who made their way to Alberta to play with one of our minor-league affiliates decades ago.

With regular season play mostly wrapped up and championship tournaments in full swing, we are preparing for the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season to start up at the end of the month while we keep an eye on postseason action in the United States.

It’s time once again to check in on the best hitters and pitchers from our province who have traveled south to play college baseball in the United States.

In this edition of Alberta Dugout Digest, we explore the batters who excel at cranking out home runs, triples, and runs batted in (RBI), along with the leaders in slugging percentage and batting average.

We also examine the pitchers who have done the best job of preventing home runs, the strikeout leaders, the win collectors, the earned-run average (ERA) masters, and those hurlers who are great at keeping hits to a minimum.
