He’s one of the few veterans on the Brooks Bombers but it suits Deri Steiert-Couture just fine.
The Calgary native actually began his journey in the Western Canadian Baseball League with the Weyburn Beavers in 2023, hitting .143 with one run batted in and three stolen bases in 28 games.
After not suiting up in the circuit in 2024, he returned for his first tour of duty with the Bombers in 2025 to hit .065 with two RBI and a swipe in 20 games.
The 6-foot, 180-pound infielder is hoping to put up much bigger numbers with the Bombers this season after a solid redshirt freshman season at Cerro Coso Community College, where he spotted a .254 average to go along with 14 RBI and three stolen bags.
He has found some power already this summer, belting the Bombers’ first roundtripper of the spring in his season debut on May 29 against Medicine Hat, hitting another a couple of weeks later in Okotoks.
Steiert-Couture joined us for the WCBL West Division Season Preview Extravaganza and, along with a social media from the Bombers following his first dinger, helped form the basis of our latest 7th Inning Stretch.
1. Nothing like hitting the first home run of the season for the Bombers. Was your mindset to mash the first pitch you saw?
I’d be lying if I said that I was. I was just trying to see the fast one. See something straight and let it fly.
2. As a returning veteran with the Bombers, what did you learn from last year that you’ll be looking to bring into this summer?
Just that it’s a very team game. You have to have everyone going at once and you can’t really have many passengers. Everyone has to be on the same page and just all for each other, playing a team game. It’s also about taking care of yourself, making sure you’re staying healthy for every game while also playing hard every game.
3. What makes Brooks standout in your eyes?
Brooks is such a sports-oriented town. They love their Bandits. It’s a hockey town and they showed that love for us on the baseball field, too. They love their baseball and they take pride in their sports and they cheer us on every game.
4. You’re a Calgary guy, so you’re a stone’s throw away. How cool is that you can have some of those creature comforts from home, maybe get mom and dad out to a game or two and maybe get a care package for the road?
It’s a privilege and pretty special. My parents get to come out lots and watch me play, which they haven’t really done since I was in high school. It’s always nice to see them and Brooks isn’t too far away from Calgary. Driving around the province isn’t too bad either, so it reminds me of back when I was a kid and just how fun this is.
5. When you look at the Bombers roster and the team that’s been assembled, what do you see?
We have a bunch of good, solid guys going to solid schools. We have a lot of young guys where it might be their first time playing summer ball or first time in a league like this. It’s exciting. It’s a good group and we should all come together and play some good ball.
6. After getting to the playoffs the last couple of years and not making life overly easy for Sylvan Lake and Okotoks, what do you think it will take to get the best of them or anyone else this time around?
Those teams are solid. They have a solid one-through-nine in the order and they play hard every game. We give them a run for their money every once in a while. It’s just going to be a matter of having guys get going and have good camaraderie. We had a great group of guys (last season) and that’s what made it more fun. It makes those games easier. Having lots of fun really is what most of it comes down to.
7. What would it mean to you to win a WCBL championship with the Brooks Bombers?
Oh man, that would be sweet. Just for the town itself. Just the amount of work they put in for us to even play is amazing. Just being part of a team and a group so special enough to win a championship, that would mean a lot for any baseball player in their career. It would be pretty special for anyone, really. That’s obviously the goal for us – to get back to the playoffs and do some damage while we’re there. It just comes down to having fun, like I said before. I think whoever has the most fun is the better team.
