1 Thru 9: Langdyn Cummins

By JOE McFARLAND

He might not be the biggest player on the field, but Langdyn Cummins is always doing something to make a big difference.

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound shortstop and outfielder is also very patient in waiting for the right opportunity to come his way, as witnessed by his performance at the 2024 Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase.

Cummins suited up in three games for Team New Blue at Rogers Centre in Toronto, walking five times in 10 plate appearances, while also picking up a double, stolen base and run scored.

It was a nice cap to a year where he also represented Alberta at the Baseball Canada Cup in Fort McMurray, and helped lead a strong Vauxhall Academy of Baseball squad during the course of the year.

The Taber, Alberta product’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed by college programs, and his patience paid off when he signed on the dotted line with the University of Jamestown.

We caught up with Cummins at the Sylvan Lake Gulls’ Rising Stars Classic in September, then reached back out over text after his commitment announcement.

1. What made you decide on Jamestown?

My brother (Dallas) is attending that school and he likes it. They have a good coaching staff and the facilities are very nice as well.

2. How excited are you to get down there in the fall?

It’s hard to pass up on the idea of playing baseball with your brother, so I’m very excited to go and compete for a spot down there.

3. You had a busy 2024 including taking part in the Canadian Futures Showcase. What was that experience like for you?

That experience was unreal! Surrounded by a bunch of good players and competing against each other was so good.

4. Any highlights or favourite moments from your time in Toronto?

Just hearing a glove pop in the empty stadium was so memorable. My highlight had to be running out on the field and taking it all in.

5. How did you get into baseball in the first place?

I started playing Taber Minor baseball. My dad kind of got me into it because he said it was a game of learning and that he wanted me to learn.

6. When did it turn for you where you figured out that you wanted to chase the baseball dream?

I think it was my first year of actual competitive baseball. Maybe like 12U ‘AAA’ and I was like, “Wow, this is awesome.”

7. Any favourite memories or moments on the field?

Probably my first game with Vauxhall Academy. Taber’s only like 20 minutes from the academy and I remember going to one of their events when I was kid thinking I wanted to play there. I was just in awe. It was just awesome.

8. What’s your go-to piece of advice or words of wisdom for those young kids looking to get to where you’re at now?

Just grind. You have to work hard to do it, so work hard.

9. What does the game of baseball mean to you?

More than anything, it’s just a learning experience. It’s a game of learning and it’s an awesome game. I enjoy it very much.
