Okotoks Dawgs 2018 Season Preview

The Okotoks Dawgs 2018 season gets underway on Friday in Edmonton, against a Prospects team that eliminated them from playoff contention.

After that, the Dawgs head back to Okotoks for their home opener on Saturday.

If a Record Falls at Foothills Stadium …

It was an underappreciated moment for an underappreciated ball player, who was playing in an antiquated ballpark. 

But when Cam Williams went 4-for-4 on April 27th against the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack, it was also a record-setting day for the 21-year-old third baseman. 

Playing in relative obscurity for the University of Calgary Dinos of the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) – a six-team league featuring post-secondary student athletes from Alberta and British Columbia – Williams was well aware of the record he was chasing.

Spitz Shine

It is all-hands-on-deck around Spitz Stadium in Lethbridge, as crews put the finishing touches on a $2.3-million renovation. While fans can’t wait for baseball season to start, team officials can’t wait for Old Man Winter to take a hike and let the work get done.

Tyler Hodder and Josh Iannetti have played baseball together for about a decade. Whether it’s been in Fort McMurray or in Kamloops with Thompson Rivers University, the battery-mates are looking forward to a new baseball season. They also get to learn from a former Edmonton Trappers hurler.

Big Year in the Big Ten

From the bump to the batter’s box, Matt Lloyd is poised for a big year with the Indiana Hoosiers.

The Okotoks Dawgs Academy graduate will serve as Indiana’s closer again this season and he’s a constant threat when he trades in his glove for a bat.

Dawg Days of Summer

The Dawg days of summer are over, and gone with them is the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) season.

Many of the Okotoks Dawgs players and coaches have bid summer in Alberta adieu, having packed up and left for the colleges they plan to attend in the U.S. over the school year.

A first-round playoff exit to the Edmonton Prospects in five games brought a dejecting end to the season for the Dawgs and their fans. But the post-season heartbreak should not overshadow what was a special season in Okotoks.

Q&A with Prospect Derek Shedden

The Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) championship rematch between the Edmonton Prospects and Swift Current 57’s will go to a winner-take-all deciding Game 5 tonight at Mitchell Field.

One of the players who helped make this series go the distance is Edmonton’s left fielder Derek Shedden, whose desperate diving catch put an end to Game 3 and allowed Prospects fans to breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Ian Wilson caught up with Shedden this week.
