It’s become an unexpected tradition at the Vanneste residence in Warman.

The family welcomed the entire Medicine Hat Mavericks team for a home-cooked meal during a team trip to nearby Saskatoon to face the expansion Berries in 2024 and continued it again in early 2025.

Seemingly a lock to make playoffs every year, the Medicine Hat Mavericks consistently field competitive teams each summer.

The Mavs squared off against the Okotoks Dawgs in the 2023 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) championship final – a best-of-three series they ultimately lost in three games – and they bowed out in the opening round of the postseason to the Saskatoon Berries in 2024.

Medicine Hat will seek to find the same winning formula they’ve applied to the regular season year after year and adapt it for success in the playoffs, where the team will push for a return to the WCBL final yet again.

For the first time since he was a teenager, the Warman, Saskatchewan product got to play in front of his family and friends when his Medicine Hat Mavericks visited the Saskatoon Berries.

His family also treated the Mavericks to an unforgettable feast at their home.

The Mavericks have been a big hit on the field and in the community of Medicine Hat.

After making a run to the WCBL championship final last summer, their playoff push was named the sports story of the year by the Medicine Hat News.

The Mavs will look to build on the momentum they saw during last year’s magical postseason run by turning in a more consistent regular-season record before they gear up for another run at the WCBL title.
