The Cleveland Guardians have netted a major return in exchange for Canadian pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson.

The left-handed pitcher, who trained at Dawgs Academy in Okotoks before starring for the Dawgs in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), was dealt – along with their 29th overall competitive balance pick in the 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft – to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for two-time Gold Glove winning catcher Patrick Bailey on May 9th.

For his efforts, “Tugboat” was named the Canadian Baseball Network’s Wayne Norton Award winner as the top Canadian pitcher in the minor leagues.

It makes sense that a guy named “Tugboat” would have a lot of ‘ships.

Championships, that is.

Matt Wilkinson – a lefty pitcher from Ladner, British Columbia who trained at Dawgs Academy in Okotoks – has now won championship titles in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and as a professional in the Midwest League.

Joe Sergent knew Matt Wilkinson was going to be special mere moments into an impromptu game of catch.

Calling it “The Invisible,” Wilkinson threw a ball that Sergent hadn’t seen before.
