Daril Dominates Derby

For a third straight year, a prospect from an Alberta academy has been crowned the Canadian Futures Showcase Home Run Derby champion.

It was Daril Rodriguez (Red Deer, Alta.), of St. Joseph’s Ball Academy, who dialed up the three-peat, belting 17 total home runs across two rounds (two minutes each, with a 30-second timeout available).

Josh Tucker is the founder of a new club in the Western Canadian Baseball League

The Sylvan Lake Gulls pitcher already had his named etched in the summer circuit’s history books after an outstanding 2022 season, where he set the regular season record for strikeouts with 91.

He’s now the first member of the 300 Strikeout Club.

Chatwood Named Coach of the Year

After guiding the Sylvan Lake Gulls to a regular-season wins record, Jason Chatwood has been named the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Coach of the Year.

The Gulls won 44 games during the season, improving their record to 143-65 since joining the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2021.

Flock Together

It was a banner year for the Sylvan Lake Gulls.

For the first time in franchise history, they won the WCBL regular season title, winning a record 44 games.

While they fell short in their quest for a WCBL championship, the team is optimistic about the road ahead.

No Flocking Way

Not everyone was able to comprehend what transpired at Pogadl Park in Sylvan Lake on August 15th.

Even some of the players weren’t aware that Evan Wilde, Brett Higgins and Zane Pollen had combined to throw a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Lethbridge Bulls.

It was the first no-hitter in the WCBL since 2019, but also had some mystery for many in attendance.

Jumping Into The Lake

It has been nearly 15 years since Central Alberta said “goodbye” to the Red Deer Generals.

Many questions have lingered over the years as to whether college-level baseball would ever return.

Those same fans now have their answer, as they will be saying “hello” to a Western Canadian Baseball League team in Sylvan Lake in 2021.

2020 Vision

Despite a summer that pretty much didn’t happen weather-wise, the Western Canadian Baseball League is touting it as a success.

Now all eyes are on the future, starting with a 2020 season that will feature two fewer teams.

As league president Kevin Kvame told us, 2021 will also be a season of change with expansion coming to Alberta.
