Summer Games Trailblazers

It’s been a long time coming.

For the first time ever, female baseball has been added to the Canada Summer Games, with the debut coming August 18-24 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Baseball Alberta has named its roster for the inaugural event.

1 Thru 9: Hudson Kozicki

When he was speaking with prospective college programs, Hudson Kozicki said he had one goal: play baseball as long as he can.

The Sherwood Park native and Vauxhall Academy of Baseball alum has had been on the radar of post-secondary coaches for years, having pitched in some big moments throughout his young career.

Fresh off suiting up for the Team Alberta Bighorns at the Baseball Canada Cup in Fort McMurray, he got a call from the University of Mary.

Dom-inating Performance

It has been a whirlwind few months for Dominik Morgan.

The Sherwood Park native suited up for Baseball Canada’s Junior National Team and the Sylvan Lake Gulls, and will soon join the Canadian Futures Showcase and PBR West Coast Games.

The AHP Academy product is happy to keep taking those phone calls.

Shari of All Trades

Shari Reiniger has turned her love of baseball and travel into quite the career.

Over the last 15 years, she has served in a multitude of roles for Baseball Canada at international events.

The Californian-turned-Edmontonian has seen it all, and gave us a snapshot in a recent episode of Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast.

Extra Innings

It all started as a promise to his father.

In 1991, Dr. Brent Saik told his father he would do his best to “keep kids out of the places he was going to” in his fight against cancer.

His mission became to raise awareness and funds for research through sport and he has succeeded with the World’s Longest Hockey and Baseball Games.

The latter was recently held in Sherwood Park, with $460,000 being raised.

1 Thru 9: Tony Olson

His favourite baseball memory was eliminating the Okotoks Dawgs from the 2017 Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) playoffs. During Game 5 of that first-round elimination game, Tony Olson led all batters with three hits and two runs batted in as the Edmonton Prospects emerged victorious in a 3-1 contest. 

Olson and his Edmonton teammates are once again looking to play spoiler as they face the Medicine Hat Mavericks in Game 5 of the Western Division final tonight.

We caught up with the Sherwood Park, Alberta product in advance of tonight’s winner-take-all game at Athletic Park in Medicine Hat. Here’s what Olson said when he was presented with our “1 Thru 9” series of questions:
