Daril Dominates Derby

For a third straight year, a prospect from an Alberta academy has been crowned the Canadian Futures Showcase Home Run Derby champion.

It was Daril Rodriguez (Red Deer, Alta.), of St. Joseph’s Ball Academy, who dialed up the three-peat, belting 17 total home runs across two rounds (two minutes each, with a 30-second timeout available).

Grind of the Braves

Despite a 24-12 regular season, the Red Deer CarStar Braves felt like they had to grind out a lot of wins.

They took that mentality into the Baseball Alberta Elite League playoffs, capturing the provincial title.

The Braves then rode that momentum into nationals, claiming Alberta’s first gold since 2012.

Gavin A Blast

Few athletes have their names all over the Baseball Alberta awards like Gavin Galenza.

After winning honours in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Camrose product was back at it again in 2022 with the 18U ‘AAA’ Player of the Year Award.

He lit up opposing pitchers with the Red Deer CarStar Braves in the Baseball Alberta Elite League, and will be looking to continue his success with Colby Community College this spring.

1 Thru 9: St. Joseph Baseball Academy

Opening day took on new meaning for some central Alberta students during this school year. That’s because newly opened St. Joseph High School in Red Deer began accepting baseball and softball academy students for the first time last fall.

It was a welcome addition to the school and the community for Jason Chatwood, who is the lead instructor of the academy.
