Kalem Haney has seen baseball at virtually every level in Lethbridge.

From Little League right through to the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Lethbridge Bulls, he’s also seen a championship and a season without the playoffs.

The Vauxhall Academy grad is the latest to be featured in our “1 Thru 9” series.

Pinky Promise

It would have been easy for Demitri Shakotko to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Instead of chasing the hockey dream, he went after baseball by heading to Vauxhall Academy of Baseball.

After a successful first season with Cloud County Community College, he hopes to suit up in the city his dad played junior hockey in with the Lethbridge Bulls.

Mask To Mound

Kyle Bloor first headed to Colby Community College thinking he would be trying to earn a spot as a catcher.

But with a log-jam behind the plate, the Lethbridge product tried his hand at pitching, and never looked back.

Now with Tennessee Wesleyan University, Bloor was named to the 2023 All-Appalachian Athletic Conference First Team.

Flying Together Again

It’s impossible to blame Adam Macko for his reaction to getting a random early morning call from a number he didn’t recognize.

Like many others, he just let it ring.

However, the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball product later found out it was a call to inform him he had been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, and would be reunited with his old Vauxhall teammate, Damiano Palmegiani.

If you would have told Ty Penner in high school or even early in his college baseball career that he would one day sign a contract with a Major League baseball team, he would have wanted to believe you.

But he admits, he doesn’t know if every bone in his body would have it was possible.

The Vauxhall Academy and UBC Thunderbird grad is still flying high after signing a free agent deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, leading to a whirlwind past few months.
