Year of the Dawgs

They are onto the scent of being the top high school program in North America.

After capturing an incredible record of 60 wins, five losses and one tie during the season, the Dawgs Academy 18U Black team in Okotoks has risen to new heights in the eyes of Perfect Game.

The U.S.-based organization has touted the Dawgs as the number two high school program on the continent in its annual end-of-season rankings.

Remembering a Baseball Visionary

Don Seaman, a key figure in helping ensure the Dawgs are safe at home in Okotoks, has passed away.

The baseball visionary and principal donor in the construction of Seaman Stadium and the Duvernay Fieldhouse – the headquarters of the Okotoks Dawgs of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) and the Dawgs Academy youth baseball program – passed away on July 9th, just a couple weeks short of his 100th birthday.

Turning Point

Following another early exit from the playoffs in 2018, the Okotoks Dawgs coaching staff met with founder John Ircandia.

They thought they were being fired.

Instead, they were given whatever they needed, and have been on an unprecedented championship run.

Making the List

Bob Elliott has released his list of the most influential Canadians in baseball, and the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) makes a number of appearances on the esteemed roll call.

The Hall-of-Fame journalist produced a list of 135 top names in the sport, with Alex Anthopoulos, general manager of the Atlanta Braves, at first overall; followed by Phillies skipper Rob Thomson in second; and Josh Naylor – slugger with the Cleveland Guardians – in the third spot.

Seaman Stadium Named Best Ballpark

John Ircandia and William Gardner admit that when Seaman Stadium was first being developed, they never thought it would expand to where it is today.

The home of the Okotoks Dawgs has become a well-known facility across North America, most recently recognized as the Best of the Ballparks – Summer Collegiate by Ballpark Digest.
