When the players, coaches and assorted baseball observers assembled for scout day at the Canadian Futures Showcase, Nathan Flewelling hit perhaps the longest home run of the outing.

It was a hard-struck ball that smacked off the face of Schneider’s Porch in the 200 level of Rogers Centre.

That was just the beginning of Flewelling’s long-ball exploits this week in Toronto.

Selected for Saturday’s Home Run Derby, the Innisfail, Alberta native cracked 11 total dingers over two rounds to secure the event’s championship belt.

Hammerin’ Hank Shines in Derby Delight

It was a long-ball competition that truly knocked it out of the park.

The 2023 edition of the Western Canadian Baseball League Home Run Derby featured a competitive field of participants, a special scene between father and son, and that key ingredient of plenty of dingers.

With the help of his dad, Hank Dodson of the Sylvan Lake Gulls was crowned the champion.

Machibroda Signs With Minnesota Twins

The last time the Minnesota Twins signed a 6-foot-4 left-handed hitting slugger out of Western Canada it worked out pretty well.

You may have heard of Justin Morneau.

The Twins selected him in the third round of the 1999 MLB draft and he became a four-time All-Star, the 2006 American League MVP and a Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.

Nobody is expecting Nolan Machibroda to be Justin Morneau, but, like Morneau, the 23-year-old Saskatoon native is a first baseman with a powerful left-handed stroke and a burning ambition to play in the big leagues …
