If one thing is for certain, 2023 will not be short on things for baseball fans in Alberta to talk about.

2022 certainly set the bar high with fantastic individual and team performances, great community-building opportunities and a return to “normal” of sorts after what was an unprecedented couple of years around the world.

Once again, we take a look at the top five storylines we will be watching heading into the new year.

Triple Play

In the blink of an eye, Madison Willan has somehow turned into one of the veterans of Baseball Canada’s Women’s National Team.

The multi-sport star was just getting her feet wet with the program when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

But with a young core of players coming up, the team is leaning on the Edmonton product as it looks towards the World Cup in 2024.

Celebrating Baseball Alberta’s Best in 2022

Alberta’s best was on full display in November as Baseball Alberta presented its annual awards.

The event was held in-person for the first time since 2019, and also featured the Baseball Canada awards.

We take a look back at some of the highlights from the festivities.

Ashley Stephenson is used to breaking down barriers.

Prior to the pandemic, the long-time Women’s National Team member transitioned into coaching.

However, Stephenson maintains her role as mentor, ambassador and trailblazer as she hopes to keep building the women’s game in Canada and abroad.

The Canadian baseball world is in shock following the death of Amanda Asay.

The Prince George, B.C. native passed away earlier this month following a skiing accident in Nelson.

But assuming we can have a normal(ish) summer, what other storylines should we be watching?

Heidi Northcott is no stranger to remaining calm in the storm.

On the baseball field, she held the fate of her team with every pitch she threw.

She has had to use that mindset during the COVID-19 pandemic as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in Edmonton.

To The Max

He wasn’t expecting the call.

But when St. Albert’s Max Hartman picked up his phone to hear Baseball Canada head coach Greg Hamilton’s voice, he was over the moon.

The outfielder took a moment to chat with us about representing Canada the 18U Friendship Series against the US and getting to do it with a few Dawgs Academy teammates.

Fantastic Four

Many young athletes have dreams of representing Canada on the international stage.

For four young Albertans, they took one big step towards that goal recently during Baseball Canada’s Women’s National Team Showcase.

They hope their performance was enough for them to get the call to the national team once an international event is once again organized.
