At 6-foot-6 and 185 pounds, it’s no surprise that Sean Bavis is turning a lot of heads in his freshman season at Prairie Baseball Academy.

It isn’t just his size that’s doing the trick either, as the product of the Rockies – he has roots in Banff, Canmore, Cochrane and Calgary – has been fantastic on the mound as well.

Joltin’ Joe Has Left & Gone Away

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

Fishing in Alberta, of course.

Or at least that’s what he told reporters prior to his arrival in Wild Rose Country in the summer of 1953.

“I’m going to Jasper to fish,” DiMaggio told The Vancouver Sun before hopping on a Trans-Canada Airlines plane for Calgary.

There was indeed an enticing catch to be had in Alberta at the time, in the form of his main squeeze Marilyn Monroe.

Here’s to you, Mr. Robinson

It’s not quite as iconic as the Brooklyn Dodgers hat that we associate with Jackie Robinson.

But for one night anyway, Robinson was kind enough to trade in his baseball cap for a white cowboy hat.

Just two months after winning his first and only World Series – which was also the first and only title the Brooklyn Dodgers captured – Robinson found himself in Calgary and, well, he was introduced to a folksy Alberta tradition.
