Daril Dominates Derby

For a third straight year, a prospect from an Alberta academy has been crowned the Canadian Futures Showcase Home Run Derby champion.

It was Daril Rodriguez (Red Deer, Alta.), of St. Joseph’s Ball Academy, who dialed up the three-peat, belting 17 total home runs across two rounds (two minutes each, with a 30-second timeout available).

Chatwood Named Coach of the Year

After guiding the Sylvan Lake Gulls to a regular-season wins record, Jason Chatwood has been named the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Coach of the Year.

The Gulls won 44 games during the season, improving their record to 143-65 since joining the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2021.

Flock Together

No Flocking Way

Not everyone was able to comprehend what transpired at Pogadl Park in Sylvan Lake on August 15th.

Even some of the players weren’t aware that Evan Wilde, Brett Higgins and Zane Pollen had combined to throw a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Lethbridge Bulls.

It was the first no-hitter in the WCBL since 2019, but also had some mystery for many in attendance.

Northern Exposure

The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) has announced plans to soldier on with a 2021 season that will feature all-Canadian lineups for the first time in the summer collegiate circuit’s history.
